The normally peaceful region of southern Russia was rocked by a devastating attack on Monday after three suicide bombers blew themselves up while trying to storm a police station.
According to Breitbart, no other casualties were reported in the incident, which occurred in the Novoselitskoye village in the southern Stavropol region.
“We were holding a meeting in the morning when five explosions went off,” said Sergei Karamyshev, a senior local police official. “Three people blew themselves up after an officer on duty at the entrance blocked the door to the building.”
Three of the explosions were caused by the suicide bombers and the fourth came from a grenade. Investigators are still trying to ascertain the source of the fifth explosion.
Those responsible for the bombing have not yet been identified by police.
President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the press that
an investigation is currently underway “to understand what was behind” the attack, which is seen as a major blow against The Kremlin.
“Was this a terrorist threat or gangsters? Without knowing the circumstances it is hard to say,” he said.
