Last October, the House Oversight and Government Reform committee began the process of impeaching Barack Obama’s IRS Chief John Koskinen. This movement took a major step forward on Tuesday, when this push for transparency and accountability finally reached critical mass.
“As members of Congress, we have no reason to have any confidence that Mr. Koskinen will run one of the most powerful agencies with any integrity,” committee chair Rep. Jason Chaffetz tesified at Koskinen’s first hearing, according to The Hill. “Nor can the American people feel confident the agency won’t misuse its power under his direction.”
“For these reasons, it is time for Congress to act and remove him as head of the agency,” he added, according to Conservative Tribune.
The accusations against Koskinen come from his efforts to obstruct the investigation of former IRS Chief Lois Lerner, the insidious figure behind the IRS’s attack on conservative groups. The IRS Chief specifically promised to produce all of Lerner’s emails but instead later admitting that some of them had been lost. Congress was later horrified to learn that these emails had actually been destroyed.
“Mr. Koskinen prevented Congress — and the American people — from ever learning exactly how and why their First Amendment rights were violated,” Chaffetz explained.
Chaffetz went on to cite a report last year from the Government Accountability Office that showed that the IRS had done nothing to make sure that conservative groups are not again targeted in the future.
