Last week, House Speaker Paul Ryan betrayed the Republican Party when he announced that he is “not ready” to support presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Now, this has come back to bite Ryan in a big way after a petition went viral demanding he be removed as chairman of the Republican convention in July.
According to Western Journalism, the petition states: “Since Paul Ryan has reneged on his pledge to support the GOP Nominee (Donald Trump,) he should be removed as the chairperson of the Republican National Convention, in which delegates of the United States Republican Party will choose the party’s nominees for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States in the 2016 national election will be held July 18–21, 2016.”
The petition already has over 13,000 signatures in just a few days.
This came a week after Ryan was asked outright by CNN’s Jake Tapper if he will support Trump.
“Well, to be perfectly candid with you … I’m not ready to do that at this point. I’m not there right now. I hope to though,” Ryan replied. “I think what a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard bearer that bears our standards and unifies all wings of the Republican Party.”
After receiving tons of backlash, Ryan offered to step down as chairman of the Republican Convention if that’s what Trump wants. Trump then took the high road by taking a meeting with Ryan, which will take place on Thursday.
“He’s a very good man. He wants what is good for the party, and I think we’re going to have very positive results. I would love frankly for him to stay and be chairman,” Trump said. “I think we’re going to be better if we’re unified.”
